Alexius Deepens His Knowledge and Skills in Pemba

After completing his ultrasound training in Dodoma, the Mount Meru Foundation offered Alexius the opportunity to gain three weeks of practical experience on the island of Pemba. At Abdullah Mzee Referral Hospital, he was supervised by Regina, a senior sonographer.

During this period, Alexius worked with the Minisono, the portable ultrasound device provided to Regina by the Mount Meru Foundation for training and other purposes. He examined a wide variety of patients and gained experience in performing different types of ultrasound examinations.

Under Regina’s supervision, he learned to work more systematically. He practised using different scanning windows and anatomical landmarks during abdominal examinations and further developed his obstetric ultrasound skills. He also learned how to document his findings clearly and consistently in a structured ultrasound report.

During his time in Pemba, he encountered a range of medical conditions, including fatty liver disease, kidney stones, gallstones, fibroids, cysts, ascites, hernias, hydroceles, and various pregnancy-related and foetal abnormalities. This broad experience helped him apply his knowledge in everyday clinical practice.

Regina describes Alexius as a quick learner. Even in areas he initially found challenging, such as third-trimester pregnancy assessments, he made rapid progress through regular practice.
