Initially, it seemed unlikely that we would secure placements for students in the one-year ultrasound program at KCMC in Moshi, Tanzania, this year. Unfortunately, our two registered candidates were not selected. But Tanzania wouldn’t be Tanzania without surprises. Three other students have managed to secure spots in the new ultrasound program in Dodoma. They are now sponsored by and under the care of our Foundation.

Previously, we reported on the challenges our Foundation faces in getting students placed in the one-year ultrasound program at KCMC in Moshi. With limited training slots and an opaque selection and application process, we began exploring alternative training opportunities. Two years ago, a second one-year ultrasound program was launched in Tanzania, established by the Benjamin Mkapa Institute in Dodoma.

This is our first collaboration with the program in Dodoma, so we are uncertain about what to expect in terms of training and quality. The same applies somewhat to the new students. However, given the significant shortage of trained ultrasound technicians, we believe it is absolutely worthwhile to pursue this additional training opportunity.

Fortunately, since September, the Foundation has been strengthened by three experienced senior ultrasound technicians from the Netherlands. They provide additional one-on-one guidance for the students. In one of the upcoming blogs, the senior technicians will introduce themselves and share their experiences with the students so far

Unexpectedly quick: 3 students placed in Dodoma
