improves mother and child care in Afrika
Two of our students who recently completed the ultrasound training in Dodoma, Yohana and Noela, have since traveled to Zanzibar for an additional two-week internship with our local trainer, Regina Namumba. The foundation covers the students’ training, accommodation, and travel expenses.
During this practical internship, the sonographers are taught the finer points of ultrasound and, above all, gain a great deal of hands-on experience. Logging enough flight hours is essential for developing the necessary probe skills. In addition, it is important to see a wide range of cases, both normal and abnormal. Ultrasound images may seem mostly black and white, but in practice it is often about the many shades of gray—and the correct interpretation of them.
Once our sonographers start working in their own hospitals, they must also be able to provide doctors with sound advice and help shape treatment plans. Which follow-up steps are needed? Should a patient be referred—and if so, for what, to whom, and with what urgency?
At the beginning of September, our sonographers will begin working independently in their own hospitals. This internship serves as an extra step to fully prepare them!
