With ultrasound equipment, diagnoses can be made quickly during pregnancy without any medical intervention.

Some examples are:

  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Situation deviations
  • A pregnancy located outside the womb (life-threatening)
  • Congenital abnormalities and growth retardation
  • A placenta at the exit (life-threatening)
  • Term determination (duration of pregnancy)

If the term can be determined early in the pregnancy, a too small child or premature birth can be discovered later in the pregnancy.

These findings can determine the manner of intervention as well as the place of delivery. And that can be of vital importance!

Ultrasonography costs little besides the investment in an ultrasound machine and the technique (working with it) is easy to learn with the right training.

The people behind the Mount Meru Foundation have the knowledge and expertise in obstetrics and ultrasound.
For the rural areas of Tanzania the use of a portable ultrasound device is a godsend, it is easy to transport and can be used in several places. The modern mobile ultrasound devices have the size of a laptop.

Ultrasound scanning as imaging diagnostic technique is widely used in medicine.
Given the safety in comparison with other imaging techniques, the ultrasound scan in current healthcare has become a matter of course in our Western world.
